I want to start this with a little education.  Hits actually tell you how many files are being downloaded from your server. Web pages are composed of many different files.  So when talking about your website statistics, it’s important to understand what number you’re talking about, since the meaning behind that number varies quite a bit.

To give you an idea, the actual web page, images, videos, CSS files, Javascript files, and favicons are the most common types of files that appear on a web page.  Each of these will most likely be in a separate file. Each file downloaded is considered one hit.  How many hits per page can vary greatly! A larger site may have 10 to 20 files per page, therefore increasing your hit count by that amnount!  Do you really want to be overestimating your visitors?

As webmasters, designers, business owners, SEOs, etc., we are not concerned with hits to a site  It makes more sense to use visits or unique visits (unique visits being a measure of how many uniquely different people visited your site, as far as can be determined).

I recommend Google Analytics, it’s a great program  Best of all, it’s free!
